Sustainable Human to Building Behavioural Interaction Project

Increasing energy efficiency is a fundamental pillar for the socio-economic welfare of Egypt. However, the rapid growth of the country limits the resources required to meet its national demands, particularly in higher education buildings. The significance of the SusHumBuild institutional link project is to bridge the gap between the rapidly developing advancement advancements in research and training occupants’ behaviour on energy use between the British University in Egypt (BUE) and London South Bank University (LSBU).
The aim of the SusHumBuild project to build capacity in education, research, innovation and exploitation of state-of-the-art energy efficiency strategies from a holistic sustainable development approach as an influential initiative to meet socio-economic demands both in Egypt and the UK. The objective is to develop training programmes and benchmarking criteria for educational sector that coordinate between stakeholders, researchers, academics and practitioners that embed holistic energy conscious implementation to avoid overheating risk and reduce energy consumption of higher educational buildings in different climate regions both in Egypt and the UK.

    The School of the Built Environment and Architecture, both Centre for Civil and Building Services Engineering (CCiBSE) & Architecture Group at the London South Bank University (LSBU) are the main institutional partners leading the SusHumBuild research project.

  • The British University in Egypt (BUE)

    The Department of Architectural Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, the British University in Egypt (BUE) is the partner institution in Egypt facilitating stakeholders’ workshops and supporting all project deliverables.

  • British Council

    This project is funded by the Going Global Partnerships Fund of the British Council (Grant ID: RE2023-007). The total fund is £49,900 to cover the project duration of 12 months (ending February 2025).



Project Deliverables

1.        Develop manual of guidelines that bridge the current gap between energy efficient technologies and theories and embedding sustainable design in practice.

2.        Engage in world-class research and publications that underline, support and inform the training and professional development through the SusHumBuild.

3.        Develop and offer professional training programmes that equip diverse stakeholder groups in higher education sector with innovative knowledge and education supported by the Institutional Link project.

4.        Introduce a new guideline to improve energy efficiency of higher education buildings for training and professional development based on the notion of flexible, blended and tailored programmes.

5.        Expand and disseminate the experience and newly developed framework to the wider research, educational and industrial communities to learn the best practice in sustainable design education and training for diverse target groups.
